Things To Do | December 30, 2022 | SWSS Staff

in Phoenix & Scottsdale

Scottsdale may be known for its luxurious resorts, world-class golfing, and year-round sunshine, but there is also something else this city is known for that often flies under the radar—its vibrant country-western culture!

While in Scottsdale, listening to live country music and two-stepping at one of the top country bars in Phoenix is a great way to connect with the city’s roots. So, pull on your boots and head to one of these top places for country dancing in Phoenix & Scottsdale!

Top Country Bars for Dancing in Scottsdale

There are plenty of fun country bars in Scottsdale where you can dance the night away, but each one offers something unique.

Find the perfect bar for you and your crew from the list below:

1. Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row

Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row is one of the most popular country bar chains in the nation, with two locations in Greater Phoenix (Old Town Scottsdale & Gilbert) and other locations in Denver and on Broadway Street in Nashville. This popular spot in the Scottsdale Entertainment District may be a country bar, but it’s also a modern nightlife destination popular with the younger crowd.

Here, you can enjoy local and national acts, from DJs to live bands, as well as lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. Whiskey Row even has a weekly happy hour with $5 off select appetizers and Redneck Cocktails. You can come to this popular spot on Thursdays for free dance lessons and country music tunes from the DJ until closing.

2. Rusty Spur Saloon

Rusty Spur Saloon opened its doors in 1951, and since then, it has become a Scottsdale landmark and one of the best-known bars in Old Town Scottsdale. Visitors will be transported back to the “Wild West” with the rustic decor and can enjoy live music seven days and nights a week from the Psychobilly Rodeo Band, Mike Breen, and other local and national acts.

Rusty Spur Saloon has hosted famous musicians like Dierks Bentley, Blake Shelton, Toby Keith, and Jake Owen, and it’s a great place to listen to country music, grab a drink, and rub shoulders with some “real” cowboys. They even call themselves “Scottsdale’s Last Cowboy Saloon!”

3. Handlebar J BBQ Restaurant & Bar

Handlebar J BBQ Restaurant & Bar opened in 1966, and since then, they’ve been offering some of the best southern food, live music (every day of the week except Monday!), and free dance lessons in the Valley. Famous for its sirloin steak, ribs, and biscuits, you can’t plan to visit this popular bar for dancing without ordering drinks and dinner too.

If you don’t know how to dance, Handlebar J is a fun place where you can learn some basic moves—they offer free country dance lessons on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings.

4. Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse

Buffalo Chip Saloon, lovingly known as “The Chip,” has been a fixture in the western town of Cave Creek since 1951. It’s arguably one of the most famous country bars in Greater Phoenix, and it’s a great place to visit for all ages (although anyone under 21 must be with a parent or guardian). There is truly something for everyone to do.

Buffalo Chip Saloon is known for its bull riding events—on Wednesdays, the amateurs take the ring, and on Fridays, they save the riding for the pros. They even have a mechanical bull you can ride if you’d like to give bull riding a go on your own. However, if you’re hoping to dance—you’re in luck. There are two dance floors at this country bar, and you can enjoy live music, two-stepping, and line dancing every night of the week except Monday. The Chip even offers free two-stepping lessons on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, so you can practice up for the weekend.

Buffalo Chip also serves food, and they have several bars (both indoor and outdoor) for ordering drinks. While in Scottsdale, round up your friends for a night out at Buffalo Chip—you won’t regret it!

5. Harold’s Cave Creek Corral

While visiting Buffalo Chip, head across the street to Harold’s Corral—one of the oldest country bars in Arizona. Harold’s has been around since 1935 (for reference, Arizona became a state in 1912). Needless to say, you can find some “real” cowboys and cowgirls at this authentic local spot!

Harold’s is known for its hand-carved steaks and other delicious meals, like smoked brisket and baby back ribs. After you get dinner and a drink at the bar, grab your partner or some friends and hit the dance floor. Harold’s offers live music most nights, and frequent performers include Crown Kings and the Arizona Blues Project.

6. Denim & Diamonds

Denim & Diamonds in Mesa, Arizona, boasts one of the largest dance floors in the Valley. At this country bar, you can enjoy free dance lessons at 6:30 PM on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as well as live music from local and national bands.

Denim & Diamond has a great reverse happy hour ($0.50 drink specials from 8 PM – 11 PM on Fridays and 8 PM – 10 PM on Saturdays) and a well-known “Ladies Night” on Wednesday, with $0.50 drinks for everyone from 6 PM – 10 PM. If you want to make new friends during your trip to Scottsdale, head to Denim & Diamonds for a great time.
