Does It Snow in Scottsdale, Arizona? What to Expect When Visiting Scottsdale in Winter

Local Info | August 21, 2024 | SWSS Staff

Scottsdale, Arizona, is known for having more than 300 days of sunshine annually — making it a fantastic destination for outdoor adventures and activities like golfing, hiking, and swimming.

However, on the rare overcast, cloudy days in the winter, you might wonder, “Does it ever snow in Scottsdale?” That’s a great question! Below, we’ll take a deeper look at Scottsdale’s winter weather and share an overview of the best things to do in Scottsdale in the winter.

Does It Snow in Scottsdale?

Technically, no. Though many regions in Northern Arizona, like Flagstaff and Sedona, experience snowfall regularly, snow is unique in the Valley of the Sun. On average, Scottsdale receives about ten inches of precipitation annually and zero inches of snow.

While it doesn’t snow regularly in Scottsdale, if temperatures get low enough, you might see a few snow flurries. Snow is most likely to happen in North Scottsdale and Cave Creek, where elevation levels are slightly higher than Old Town Scottsdale and near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in Downtown Phoenix. It usually happens during the coldest months of the year (December, January, and February).

Snow fell in Scottsdale for about 30 minutes at the Troon North Golf Club in North Scottsdale in 2022, according to The Arizona Republic. This is just one of the many times snowfall has been recorded in Scottsdale! Though the snow doesn’t stay on the ground long, seeing the desert landscape and mountains blanketed with snow is a gorgeous sight to see.

Average Winter Weather in Scottsdale

The image shows a wooden bench with the words "Old Town Scottsdale" carved into the backrest. The bench is positioned in a quaint, sunlit street scene, with a blurred background that includes buildings, a car, and American flags.

While you might catch some snow flurries during a trip to Scottsdale — it’s pretty unlikely.

Scottsdale’s average high temperatures during the winter range between 68°F and 73°F, and the lows average between 38°F and 42°F. As you can see, the temperatures rarely even get low enough for it to snow in Scottsdale!

When visiting Scottsdale in winter, you can plan for warm, sunny days, crisp, cool evenings, and little to no precipitation (or snowfall!). This is why Scottsdale is such a popular destination for snowbirds.
