Top 5 Mountains in Scottsdale, AZ (& How to Explore Them)

Things To Do | October 15, 2025 | SWSS Staff

Scottsdale might be known for its luxurious shopping malls, world-class golf courses, and vibrant dining and nightlife scene — but what really makes Scottsdale such an iconic destination is its mountainous desert terrain, which sets the backdrop for endless outdoor fun.

If you’re planning a trip to the Sonoran Desert soon, get out and explore one (or more!) of these mountains or mountain ranges in Scottsdale for unforgettable views and desert adventures!

Key Takeaways

  • From iconic boulders to stunning mountain ranges with hundreds of towering peaks, Scottsdale is renowned for its unique and scenic mountainous desert terrain.
  • Scottsdale’s mountain ranges are the perfect launching point for desert adventures, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and stargazing.
  • Before heading into Scottsdale’s mountains, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, bring water, and stay off the trails in the summer to avoid the intense heat.

Famous Mountains and Mountain Ranges in Scottsdale and Phoenix

1. Camelback Mountain

Camelback Mountain is arguably the most famous peak in Greater Phoenix, known for its profile that resembles a camel’s hump (hence the name!).

Located slightly northwest of Old Town Scottsdale, Camelback Mountain is a popular spot for hiking in Scottsdale, featuring two iconic trails (Cholla Trail and Echo Canyon) that, although challenging, offer some of the most spectacular views in Phoenix.

2. McDowell Mountains

The McDowell Mountains, located northeast of North Scottsdale, are one of the prime destinations for outdoor adventures in Scottsdale.

Home to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, these desert mountains are protected by the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and feature numerous trailheads in Scottsdale, including the Granite Mountain Trailhead, Pima Dynamite Trailhead, and Gateway Trailhead.

3. Pinnacle Peak

Desert landscape with tall cacti and mountain views at sunset.

Pinnacle Peak is a stunning granite summit in a high-end neighborhood in North Scottsdale, surrounded by world-class golf courses and luxurious homes.

Located in a well-maintained park, Pinnacle Peak is best known for the Pinnacle Peak Trail, a challenging four-mile out-and-back trail with spectacular views of the desert. This park is also a great spot for rock climbing and picnicking in Scottsdale.

4. Piestewa Peak

With a height of 2,610 feet, Piestewa Peak is the second-highest peak in the Phoenix Mountains, second to Camelback Mountain.

Piestewa Peak is located directly west of Central Scottsdale and takes about 20 minutes to reach from Gainey Ranch and McCormick Ranch. It offers several trails, including the extremely challenging Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, which offers sweeping views of Greater Phoenix.

5. Tom’s Thumb

Rocky formation of Tom’s Thumb rising from the desert hillside.

Though Tom’s Thumb is not technically a mountain, this iconic rock formation in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve definitely deserves a spot on this list of the best mountains in Scottsdale. Located at the end of the Tom’s Thumb Trail, this thumb-shaped rock is one of Scottsdale’s most famous landmarks!

What Is There to Do in Scottsdale’s Picturesque Mountains?

Hiker walking along a red dirt trail through desert terrain under a bright blue sky.

Most of the mountains in Scottsdale include well-maintained multi-use trails, making them perfect for a wide range of outdoor adventures, including the following.

Hiking Trails

Many of the best hiking trails in Scottsdale and Phoenix can be found within Scottsdale’s most famous mountain ranges. From challenging hikes to the top of towering peaks, like Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak, to beginner-level-friendly hikes in the McDowell Mountains, such as Gateway Loop Trailhead, Scottsdale offers a trail for hikers of all ages and experience levels!

Mountain Biking

Though Scottsdale is home to several well-maintained road biking trails, if you’re looking for a challenge, the rugged mountains offer a wide range of mountain biking trails, as well. Some of the most popular trails are Corral Loop at Brown’s Ranch and Desert Park Trail to Gateway Loop.

Horseback Riding

Scottsdale’s mountainous terrain is a great backdrop for thrilling adventures in the “Wild West” — most notably, horseback riding! Local ranches like MacDonald’s Ranch and Arizona Horseback Adventures can help you saddle up to experience Scottsdale’s mountains from horseback, like a true cowboy.

Local Tip: For locals who own horses, many of Scottsdale’s trailheads in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve offer horse trailer parking, allowing you to bring your own horses for a leisurely ride on the trails.

Rock Climbing

Some of the mountains in Scottsdale, including Pinnacle Peak and Tom’s Thumb, are popular spots for rock climbing and bouldering. Many of the mountains in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve are composed of granite and have a rough texture, making them ideal for climbing.

Stargazing

McDowell Mountain Regional Park is one of the best places for stargazing in Scottsdale! The dark night skies provide the perfect conditions for stargazing, and the park is open until 8 or 9 PM (depending on the season), allowing stargazers plenty of time to admire the sparkling constellations.

Local Education

Want to learn more about Scottsdale’s history, wildlife, and geology? Many of the trails within the mountains in Scottsdale, including the Bajada Nature Trail at Gateway Loop Trailhead and the Marcus Landslide Trail at Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, feature interpretive and orientation signs along the trails that provide fascinating local facts and information.

Tips for Visiting the Mountains in Scottsdale

  • When to Visit — Scottsdale’s mountains are best enjoyed during the fall, winter, or spring. The summer months are generally too hot to hike, bike, ot explore the mountainous terrain.
  • What to Bring — Before heading into the mountains in Scottsdale, be prepared with proper footwear, such as closed-toe shoes or hiking boots. Wear lightweight clothing and sun protection, including a hat and sunscreen, and, of course, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated!
  • Safety Advice — Seriously… it’s too hot during the summer in Scottsdale to hike (take our word for it, please!). If you’re planning to visit Scottsdale in the summer, admire the mountains from a distance and check out some of these indoor activites in Scottsdale to stay cool, instead.
