11 Fun Things to Do with Teens in Phoenix on a Family Vacation

Things To Do | Publish Date: March 4, 2025 | SWSS Staff

It can be challenging to find fun things to do that will entertain the whole family on vacation — from small kids to teenagers. Fortunately, Phoenix and Scottsdale are fantastic cities to visit for families because they offer a wide selection of family-friendly activities that kids and parents of all ages will love.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of our best recommendations for things to do in the Valley of the Sun for older kids and teenagers — although younger kids (and adults!) are sure to enjoy many of these activities on a family vacation to Scottsdale and Phoenix as well. Let’s jump right in!

Fun Activities and Things to Do in Phoenix for Teenagers

1. See Desert Plants at the Desert Botanical Garden

If you’re looking for a beautiful (and educational!) outing with your teenager, visit the Desert Botanical Garden during a trip to Arizona.

This world-class botanical garden showcases 50,000+ stunning desert plants from around the world in over 140 acres of outdoor displays. Teenagers will love learning about the desert landscapes and snapping photos and videos to share with their friends.

2. Admire Beautiful Art at the Phoenix Art Museum

If you have an artistic teen, a visit to the Phoenix Art Museum will spark their interest.

Considered the largest art museum in the Southwest, this museum displays 20,000+ pieces of art in a wide range of permanent and rotating exhibits, including an infinity mirror room, fashion collections, and an artist gallery showcasing Asian, American, European, and Latin American art.

3. Meet Endangered Animals at the Phoenix Zoo

A majestic tiger with striking orange and black fur walks toward the camera in a lush, green outdoor setting.

Think the zoo is only a great place to bring little kids? Think again!

The Phoenix Zoo is a fun spot for kids of all ages, making it an excellent option for a family-friendly outing in Phoenix and Scottsdale. As one of the largest non-profit zoos in the country, the Phoenix Zoo cares for 3,000+ animals of 400 species, including endangered species like Sumatran tigers, Borneo orangutans, and white rhinoceroses.

Local Tip: Teens who love wildlife will also enjoy seeing the aquatic life at OdySea Aquarium and the beautiful butterflies at Butterfly Wonderland.

4. Discover Native American History at the Heard Museum

Teenagers interested in history or culture will likely love visiting the Heard Museum in Phoenix or Scottsdale, Arizona.

This museum was created in the 1920s to preserve and showcase the rich, vibrant artwork of American Indians. Its collections include everything from baskets and jewelry to clothing and pottery in permanent and rotating exhibitions.

5. Race Around the Track at Octane Raceway

If you’re traveling to Phoenix and Scottsdale with older kids looking for a thrill, visit Octane Raceway — an indoor-outdoor 1/3-mile raceway for high-speed go-kart racing.

Drivers must be at least 16 years old and have a valid photo ID to participate, so this activity is only suitable for older teens. However, Octane Raceway also has an arcade and axe-throwing, making it a family-friendly outing for kids of all ages.

Local Tip: Have a thrill-seeking teen who doesn’t quite meet the age limit to race at Octane Raceway? Consider indoor skydiving at iFLY Phoenix instead!

6. Go Bowling at Mavrix

A group of people at a bowling alley each selects a colorful bowling ball from a rack, preparing to play.

If you’re searching for indoor entertainment for teens on a (rare!) rainy day in Scottsdale, consider heading to Mavrix.

This indoor entertainment venue offers a wide range of activities and games that both kids and adults will love. It includes state-of-the-art bowling lanes, a large arcade with laser tag and ping-pong tables, and a full-service restaurant and bar.

7. Play an Interactive Golf Game at TopGolf

An older instructor guides a younger golfer on his swing at an interactive golf driving range, with clubs and digital screens visible in the background.

Scottsdale is known for its world-class golf courses, but if you don’t think your teen will play an 18-hole course, consider heading to TopGolf instead.

TopGolf is one of the most popular indoor golf venues in Phoenix and offers a luxury, interactive golf experience for all ages. Your family can take turns choosing games to play while enjoying handcrafted food and drinks between swings from an all-weather hitting bay.

8. Hike in the Scenic Sonoran Desert

Soak up the Arizona sunshine with your teenagers on one of the best hikes in Scottsdale.

Camelback Mountain is an iconic hike in Phoenix with sweeping views of the city, but it’s a challenging climb and should only be attempted by experienced hikers and athletic teenagers. For something less strenuous, the Gateway Loop Trail in the McDowell Sonoran Reserve is a moderate four-mile hike with beautiful views of the desert.

Local Tip: Looking for more outdoor adventures in Scottsdale? Consider horseback riding, ATV tours, or a hot air balloon ride for teens who can’t get enough of the beautiful desert landscapes!

9. Shop and Eat in Old Town Scottsdale

For a fun afternoon outing that the whole family will love, head to Old Town Scottsdale.

There is something to do for all interests in Old Town Scottsdale — you and your teen can shop at the charming local boutiques or Scottsdale Fashion Square for trendy clothes or souvenirs to bring home, browse the art galleries in the Scottsdale Arts District, or eat at one of the best restaurants in Old Town Scottsdale.

10. Attend a Spring Training Game

A baseball player in a red jersey and helmet prepares to swing as a pitcher in white winds up for a throw on a sunny outdoor field.

If you’re visiting Scottsdale in March, you can’t miss the chance to attend a spring training game, especially if your teens love baseball (or sports in general).

The MLB Cactus League practices in stadiums across Greater Phoenix, including Scottsdale, Peoria, Surprise, and Glendale, so find where your teen’s favorite team plays and grab some tickets for a fun day out at the ballgame!

11. Embark on a Scenic Day Trip

After seeing the sights in Phoenix and Scottsdale, consider taking a day trip to explore more of Arizona.

Go hiking in the beautiful red rocks or slide down a natural waterslide at Slide Rock State Park in Sedona, go on a ghost tour in Jerome, head up to Prescott to go kayaking on Watson Lake or Lynx Lake, or round up some fishing supplies and cast a line in Payson.
