Things To Do | September 2, 2025 | SWSS Staff

Whether you’re interested in hitting the hiking trails, biking through the mountains, or soaring over the desert on a hot air balloon ride, no trip to Scottsdale would be complete without an outdoor adventure in the picturesque terrain of the Sonoran Desert to soak up some of the best views in Scottsdale.

However, if you’re looking for an adventure that is a little less thrilling while still wanting the reward of scenic desert views with sweeping mountain vistas, native wildlife, and desert plants, you’ll love taking a leisurely drive along the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. Here’s everything you need to know about this drive, including what to expect, tips for exploring, and what there is to see and do along the way!

What’s the History of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive?

The sun sets behind a cactus with glowing desert plants in the foreground.

The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive was established by residents of Cave Creek and Carefree in 1963. It was primarily built out of a desire to preserve the drive’s roadside vegetation, scenic views, and natural beauty. However, it was partially established out of fear that the road would become overdeveloped, like other parts of Greater Phoenix were becoming at the time.

The Greater Pinnacle Peak Association oversaw the project, but at its heart, it was a community effort, with residents and volunteers pitching in to preserve the area’s unique charm. Today, a volunteer organization called Friends of the Scenic Drive works toward preserving and promoting the drive and maintaining the road to remain beautiful for all who live or travel to the area.

Where Does the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive Begin & End?

The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive begins at the intersection of North Scottsdale Road and Happy Valley Road in North Scottsdale. It stretches 6.5 miles before ending just south of Cave Creek Road. The entire drive takes about 30 minutes to one hour to complete.

What’s There to See Along the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive?

A rocky desert hillside dotted with cacti and distant mountains under a clear sky.

The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, first and foremost, offers spectacular views of the Sonoran Desert and its key highlights, including Pinnacle Peak, Lone Mountain, Black Mountain, the McDowell Mountains, and the Tonto National Forest. You’ll see thousands of the iconic saguaro cacti in their natural habitat, as well as other unique desert plants, like barrel and cholla cacti, ocotillo, and palo verde trees. If you’re driving at dawn or dusk, you might also spot desert wildlife, including roadrunners, javelina, coyotes, jackrabbits, rattlesnakes, and even bobcats!

The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive includes at least a dozen informative signs where you can learn more about the area’s natural features, geology, native plants, and wildlife. These signs are situated next to pull-offs that provide picturesque views of the surrounding terrain.

In addition to the dozen informative signs, scenic viewpoints, and natural features along the way, the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive is also home to some of the most popular attractions and things to do in Scottsdale, including the following:

MacDonald’s Ranch

Cowboys and children sit and stand around a campfire at dusk with a horse nearby.

MacDonald’s Ranch is a family-owned company that is one of the premier providers of horseback rides in Scottsdale.

This local ranch also offers other “western-themed” adventures, like cowboy cookouts and stagecoach rides, to give visitors to Scottsdale a taste of the Wild, Wild West. During the fall, this ranch hosts one of the best fall festivals and pumpkin patches in Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Carefree

Carefree is an upscale, artistic town located north of North Scottsdale, near the end of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive, that is home to some of the best golf courses in Phoenix, like The Boulders.

Spend a couple of hours in Carefree exploring the high-end boutique shops and art galleries, wander through the Carefree Desert Gardens, shop at the Carefree Farmers Market on Friday mornings, or book an afternoon tee time at one of the town’s high-end golf courses.

Cave Creek was settled during the gold rush in the 1800s and has maintained much of its historic charm and a one-of-a-kind “western town” atmosphere. This town is home to some of the best bars for country dancing in Scottsdale, like Buffalo Chip Saloon and Harold’s Corral, excellent local restaurants, and fantastic hiking trails at Cave Creek Regional Park.
